Highlight the descriptive text you’d like to turn into a hyperlink, select Insert in the menu bar, and choose Link. In this example, I’ve linked to a PDF document stored on my Google Drive. Readers can open or download the page using an app of their choice.

The text around the link might explain what they’re clicking, but when the user reads the link itself they won’t have a clue. If there’s a lot of text, this could slow the user down a lot. End on a Link

Or, maybe you need to add a link to an Instagram Story or YouTube video. Here you are, scratching your head and trying to figure out how to make a hyperlink. The main point is to find a way to make sure that link text is descriptive and useful. I’m a front end developer at Equinox OLI, working on open source library software. I was previously a freelance WordPress developer in higher education.

In the second image, the surrounding text content is removed leaving only the link text. This demonstrates how meaningless nondescriptive link text is for screen reader users. Instead of linking to the words “click here”, you should link to the concrete and proper nouns of a sentence.

If several links on a page say, “click here,” we have to remember the context of each one. Links written with unique and descriptive phrases don’t make us do the extra work of building this mental model as we read. Sometimes, calls to action are placed within webpage content at a moment when we really don’t want choices. We just want to be directed to that cool thing you just showed us. As a user, click here they’re already researching a product or a service they want to purchase.

Whatever your situation rest assured that we have a great playbook to take your business to the next level. Assuming that the reader can tell what’s a link and what isn’t, you don’t have to tell her to click it. The web has been part of our professional lives for twenty years now. Even the grumpiest old technophobe in your organization knows what to do with a link. You’re already getting sick of seeing it on this page, aren’t you? But it’s so much worse for people with attention deficit problems or visual impairments.

However, uninformative link text will be read by itself, without the context of the additional words in the sentence. This is a real dilemma faced by users who have visual impairments and use screen reader software that reads information from a computer or mobile device screen out loud. Screen reader users can choose an option to hear a list of all the links on the page to quickly find what they need. It’s also best to make whatever you’re linking to as specific as possible. For example, if you’re linking to an article or book, don’t link to the words “article” and “book”.
